Choosing Spring and Barrel Combinations

A first-pass process for matching spring load, barrel length, and intended FPS without turning tuning into guesswork.

Procedure Notes

This guide exists because “more spring” and “longer barrel” are easy decisions to make and expensive ones to reverse. Forge Reference should connect tuning choices to measurable outcomes.

Tools Needed

  • Chronograph
  • Hex drivers
  • Known-good darts
  • Notebook or phone for test data

Steps

  1. Start with the intended FPS target and local field limits before installing anything.
  2. Change one variable at a time, beginning with spring weight and then barrel length.
  3. Fire a controlled sample over a chronograph and record average FPS plus visible grouping changes.
  4. Stop chasing speed if the grouping, prime weight, or reliability worsens.

Troubleshooting Notes

  • A faster setup is not automatically the better setup if seal drag or dart fit is degrading accuracy.
  • If FPS is erratic, check seal condition and muzzle alignment before blaming the spring.
